Call for Views: Public Engagement Model

Closed31 Jan, 2024, 9:00am - 29 Mar, 2024, 5:00pm

Primary tabs

To help Northern Ireland (NI) reach its Energy Strategy target of 80% renewable energy generation by 2030, SONI is reviewing its public engagement model to ensure our engagement processes are making an effective and efficient contribution to the progress of NI’s energy transition.

SONI is committed to delivering public engagement that works to build trust and confidence within communities and we consider early and frequent engagement to be both the right and fair thing to do.

Robust and transparent public engagement processes lead to the best application of planning policy and infrastructure development. Without local knowledge and buy-in, projects are at risk of garnering local opposition which can result in delays or failure to get necessary planning consents. Therefore, we want to afford stakeholders, local communities and landowners the opportunity to offer feedback on our current model to ensure it helps to enable a move toward a cleaner energy future.

SONI invites written evidence on the following questions:

  • How can SONI enhance the current 3-Part Process for Developing the Grid?
  • How can we balance in-depth public engagement with strict legislative timescales?
  • At what stage should SONI engage with the public on the suggested location of new infrastructure placement?
  • What public engagement best practice exists elsewhere for SONI’s consideration?
  • What technologies exist that will help to enhance SONI’s public consultation processes?
  • Are there other stakeholders that SONI should consider consulting at Part 1 of our 3-Part Process?
  • What best practice exists to engage ‘hard to reach’ communities in NI?

We would like to thank all stakeholders and interested parties who respond to the Call for Views. Your feedback is important to us and we look forward to receiving your submissions.

Responses can also be emailed to info@soni.ltd.uk or via post to Public Engagement Review, SONI Ltd, 12 Manse Road, Belfast, BT6 9RT

The consultation is open from 9 February 2024 and closes on 29 March 2024, 17:00.
