Under Condition 20 of its Licence to Participate in the Transmission of Electricity (the Licence), SONI is required to periodically review the Northern Ireland Transmission System Security and Planning Standards (TSSPS).
Whilst the TSSPS were reviewed in 2023 to account for updated voltage step criteria, the majority of the TSSPS remains unchanged since the last major review in 2015. Since that date, there have been significant technological developments in Northern Ireland, including the development of PV generation and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Additionally, large demand and interconnector developments are presently in the connections process.
In accordance with Condition 20 of the Licence, SONI is holding a consultation now regarding a number of changes to the TSSPS, to ensure these technology developments are taken into account.
Following the conclusion of this consultation period, SONI will prepare a report summarising any feedback received, an updated TSSPS and submit both to the Utility Regulator for its consideration.
We look forward to your consultation response on the proposals contained in this document and welcome feedback via our Consultation Portal or by email (info@soni.ltd.uk) until 5pm on the 19th December 2025.
